Can’t Sleep?
Do you find sleep to be elusive when your anxiety is soaring or your mood is low?
*
Has sleeplessness ever taken on a life of its own?
*
Do you ever avoid activities, procrastinate sleep or fixate on whether or not you will be able to get enough sleep?
*
It’s common for sleep to get disrupted when we are at a crossroads, or dealing with more stress. Oftentimes, just beginning to process feelings that have been stuffed into the background can help sleep return. But if you’ve experienced a pattern of sleep disruption or insufficient sleep, therapy that incorporates specific knowledge about sleep and its relationship to your mood and anxiety could support you in finding yourself again.
When you can’t sleep, it even small tasks can feel insurmountable. Therapy for insomnia can help.
CBT-I for Insomnia
Our therapist Lianna Kirakosyan, LMFT is a certified provider of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) is a proven therapy for insomnia that helps people sleep better without relying on medication. While medication can often be a first line treatment for severe insomnia, there are many reasons why people often prefer not to rely on sleep medication for long periods of time.
In a nutshell, CBT-I teaches practical skills to improve sleep by examining and then changing the habits and thoughts that may be keeping you awake. In our work together, we help you figure out what kind of sleep schedule can help you get back on track, what kinds of sleep routines can help you prepare for sleep, and what kinds of beliefs about sleep can help you relax into sleep and find deeper rest.
CBT-I is evidence based, meaning that many people have found that these strategies help them fall asleep more easily, stay asleep longer, and feel more rested.
Integrative Therapy for Insomnia
Many of our clients are hoping for a therapy experience that integrates practical support around sleep that draws from the research with a more holistic, exploratory therapy experience.
Several of our therapists really love to integrate key concepts from CBT-I into a supportive, curious therapeutic journey. We are affirming and trauma informed and understand that what works for one person might not work for another. In addition to exploration of sleep habits and beliefs about sleep, your therapy with us might also include elements of:
Mindfulness
Somatic therapy
Psychodynamic therapy
Relational, supportive talk therapy
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)
CO-Occurring Insomnia
We often see clients who struggle to sleep when they are experiencing relationship difficulties, anxiety, OCD, depression, eating disorders or post-traumatic symptoms, or who are struggling to sleep after having a baby.
If this is you, your therapy will probably weave between support and exploration of multiple themes, with a goal of understanding how they relate to each other, and to your underlying experience of yourself and the world.
